Heating updates for the empty nest

Our son had finally flown the coup and went away to college. We had left his bedroom the same for his first few years of school. we figured he would be returning for holidays and summer vacations and we wanted him to know, during those first tough years, that there was always a spot at home for him. By his senior year he and his friends had gotten their own house to rent and with a career under way, we knew it was time to take back his room. We had wanted to make some HVAC renovations to our home, not that our HVAC unit was in need of serious renovations, we just figured it was time get some of things we had always wanted but didn’t have the time or money for. Winters were brutal, along with our furnace and wood stove, we also depended on space heaters in our bedroom and the family room on particularly cold nights. With Jason’s room unoccupied, my husband and I moved into it while we had the flooring in our bedroom ripped up and let the HVAC techs install the radiant heating we had always wanted but never got around to. We also opted for a gas lit fireplace, we had the perfect space in our room for it, and this would be one less space heater we had to use during winter. The added benefit was should we lose power in the winter during some snow or ice storm, we would wouldn’t be spending the night freezing or bundled up on the futon we dragged out into the dining room in front of the wood stove. It was good to make these long awaited changes.
